The electric charging station, located at the Agricultural Commissioner’s Office, became operational in May 2013 and was the first electric charging station installed at a Monterey County facility. The station is located at 1428 Abbott Street in Salinas and provides Level I and II charging. The motorcycle, shown above, belongs to a member of the public who was charging up on a strip to Southern California. The station is used by other private electric vehicles.
The Agricultural Commissioner hopes to be able to add some electric vehicles to the department’s fleet in the future, to complement the five hybrid vehicles that have been added in recent years. “We believe that the cost and the range of electric vehicles has reached a point that would allow their use by our plant quarantine inspectors who travel up to a hundred miles a day certifying our agricultural products for export,” says Eric Lauritzen, Agricultural Commissioner.
