The 2008 California Energy Code became effective on January 1, 2010. Any construction permit application submitted after January 1, 2010 will be reviewed under the new Energy Code.

MONTEREY COUNTY GOVERNING BUILDING CODE STANDARDS

Commencing January 2, 2008, new state mandated building codes (2007 California Standards Code) will take effect throughout California. All building permit applications submitted after this date must comply with the following codes:

• 2007 CA Building Code (Based on 2006 International Building Code)
• 2007 CA Fire Code (Based on 2006 International Fire Code)
• 2007 CA Plumbing Code (Based on 2006 Uniform Plumbing Code)
• 2007 CA Mechanical Code (Based on 2006 Uniform Mechanical Code)
• 2007 CA Electrical Code (Based on 2005 National Electrical Code)
• 2007 CA Energy Code

Building permit applications submitted on or before December 31, 2007 may continue to use the previous building codes provided the following occurs:

• Applicant obtains their permit within 180 days after original submittal.

Building permits issued on or before December 31, 2007 may continue to use the previous building codes provided the following occurs:

• Applicant starts work within 180 days of permit issuance
• Work authorized by the permit continues without abandonment or suspension for any period of 180 days or more

Please note that in the event of a local or state declared emergency, building regulations can change immediately and affect existing applications and permits.  Local and state officials enact these emergency ordinances to incorporate important lessons learned from emergencies such as landslides, fires and earthquakes.  Please contact any one of our plans examiners if you need further information on this special issue.
