Become a Resilient Community

Print

A resilient community is a prepared community!

What is resiliency?

Resiliency can be defined as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity - "bouncing back".

In Monterey County, we have defined it as how we - as a community - respond to, cope with, learn from and grow stronger as a result due to large emergencies or disasters.

Being resilient doesn't just happen during or after the disaster, though. It is a sustained effort to continue to build our communities, instituions and residents.

How do you fit in?

No matter how you fit into this county, building resilience requires you. Government agencies, non-profits, community-based and faith-based organizations, the private sector, all the way to each and every resident: We all play a part in our communities each and every day, and post-disaster is no different.

How can we continue to contribute? Being able to continue providing essential services to residents and clients in line with our missions and the needs of the community, supporting local needs through supply chain management and resources, and being prepared to be as self-suffucient as possible in the first 72 hours, which frees up limited available resources to deal with the emergency at hand are just a few.

When we strengthen communities in non-disaster times, we become resilient in the face of emergency situations.
