  Network for a Healthy California -- Local Incentive Award (LIA)

Description:

The Network for a Healthy California LIA Program is part of the Monterey County Health Department's Nutrition Services Division. The program seeks to increase the number of low-income residents in Salinas, Seaside, Marina, Chualar and unincorporated areas of North Monterey County known as “Prunedale” and Castroville who consume the daily recommended number of cups of fruits and vegetables and participate in recommended daily physical activity, i.e., thirty minutes of moderate physical activity per day for adults and sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day for children.

Goals:

  • To provide nutrition and physical activity education curricula and train the trainer sessions for the staff and teachers in the Salinas City Elementary, Chualar Union Elementary, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, and the North Monterey County Unified School Districts.


  • To promote healthful eating and physical activity at various school events, including back-to-school nights, career days, and healthy fundraisers.


  • To provide nutrition education and physical activity promotion to low-income parents and adults at school, community, and faith-based sites.


  • To participate in various community events, including Bi-national Health Week, local Farmers' Markets, Kid's Fest, and Spring into Health.


  • To partner with the Salinas Union High School District, Salinas Adult School teachers and staff who implement nutrition and physical activity educational activities and sessions in their Family Garden and sponsor Story Fest and Parent University.
Principal funding for the Network is made possible by in-kind contributions from state and local governments that quality for Federal Financial Participation dollars from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Stamp Program.
