Join us for a very special morning as the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library hosts a presentation and exhibit by Dee Dee Garcia White on Saturday, September 7th, at 10:15am as part of the First Saturday Series. Ms. Garcia White will speak about saddle making and the legacy of two historic saddle companies, G.S. Garcia Saddlery and J.M. Capriola Company. She is granddaughter of G.S. Garcia and a co-author of Legacy of Silver and Saddles: G.S. Garcia to J.M. Capriola, 1864-2004.
Dee Dee Garcia White’s parents, Henry and Angie Garcia, owned the Garcia Saddlery Company on Gabilan Street in Salinas. Her life and the family’s centered on the creation of beautiful silver work and saddle making at the saddle shop and riding horses.
As a young teen, she learned from her parents that her grandmother, wife of G. S. Garcia, had willed her the famous G.S. Garcia saddle that had won three gold medals at the World Fairs in St. Louis and Portland, Oregon. Although this saddle had been ridden by Governors and Presidents in parades all over the country, it normally “lived” in the front window at the shop in Salinas. It wasn’t until Dee Dee was a little older that she came to recognize its true value. The saddle is now part of the permanent collection in the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, Nevada.
In 2003, the National Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival featured the work of her famous grandfather and her father in a museum display at the Western Folk Life Center. Dee Dee, her mother, and Paula Wright from Capriola’s presented a workshop about the family history and the production of the beautiful silver work and saddles made by G.S. Garcia and his sons. After the workshop, Paula and Dee Dee decided to reprint a 1924 G.S. Catalogue which could be used by historians and collectors. Following this, they wrote the book Legacy of Silver and Saddles which gives the history of G.S. Garcia, Garcia Saddlery, Les Garcia Manufacturing Company and J.M. Capriola.
Ms. Garcia White lives in Cachagua and enjoys riding her horse Sugar. She is President of the Monterey Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival, a Board Member of the Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation and is a Committee member of the California Rodeo Museum and their annual Poetry & Music Festival.
Ms. Garcia White will be signing books after the presentation.
