Library Cards
Library cards are Free! You may apply at any County Library branch
or bookmobile. Residents of Monterey County can apply online. A card from the Monterey County Free Libraries may be used at any branch location.
If you apply in person at a branch, you will be able to check books out the same day you apply when you apply in person at a branch.
You will need to bring an ID with your name and current address to apply. Examples of valid IDs are; driver's license, an ID card issued by the DMV, printed personal check, rental or property tax receipt or business mail with a current postmark.
Materials may be borrowed upon completion of the application when
you visit one of our branches. You may use your card at any branch of the Monterey County Free Libraries.
If you register online, your card will be mailed to you. You must always bring your library card when you visit one of our branches. Cards are free to anyone with a valid form of identification showing name and current mailing address.
Materials checked out on your card are your responsibility. For your own protection, do not lend your library card. Notify the library immediately if it is lost or stolen. There is a replacement fee.

Personal Identification Numbers (PIN)
You may protect access to your library account by using a Personal Identification Number or PIN along with your library card number. You can assign yourself a PIN at any public catalog in a branch or by using the Web Catalog to access your account. There are "How-To-Do-It" fliers in the branches or you can follow the instructions on the Web Catalog.

Loan Periods
Loan periods begin from the day of checkout.

Renewals
You may renew most items once by phone, in person or online, as long
as the items are not reserved for someone else. Special Loan items
are not renewable.

Holds and Interlibrary Loans
A hold may be placed for free on County Library books from any branch or bookmobile in the system. Interlibrary Loan requests may also be placed at a
nonrefundable cost of $2.00 per item at any County Library branch or bookmobile. When the item arrives at your branch for you, you will be notified by phone.
