Monterey County Department of Child Support Services

Opening A Case

  • A case will automatically be opened when a custodial parent applies for and receives TANF (Temporary Aid for Needy Families) or Medi-Cal benefits.  Child Support Services (DCS S) is notified by the Department of Social Services when this occurs.

  • DCSS does not determine public assistance eligibility.

  • By law TANF recipients must cooperate with DCSS to establish paternity and to obtain child support payments.  Failure to provide information (whereabouts, finances, employer, Social Security number, and date of birth) regarding the non-custodial parent could affect TANF eligibility.

If you are not currently receiving public assistance, you may still initiate a case with DCSS.
