Steve Leiker is a Senior Civil Engineer in the Road and Bridge Design Section of the Department of Public Works and has been employed by the County of Monterey since June, 2007. He started as a Temporary Management Specialist and then was hired full time as a Senior Civil Engineer that following October. His primary responsibilities include design oversight and project management of storm drain and road improvements, bridges, bicycle and pedestrian trails, and utility under-grounding projects. Prior to joining Monterey County, Mr. Leiker was the Director of Public Works for the Cities of Arcata and Pacific Grove, two smaller cities in California, for a period of time that spanned 16 years. Prior to this public service, Steve served a California State Assembly Member for 6 years as a field representative and legislative assistant. After graduating from college, he was a lecturer for computer programming and engineering classes at California State University, Humboldt, for about 2-1/2 years. Mr. Leiker also served on the Arcata City Council for a little over 6 years. Steve started his working career at Beckman Instruments in Palo Alto, California, after a tour in Vietnam as a U.S. Army infantryman. He was Honorably Discharged September, 1970. Mr. Leiker is registered in California as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering. Steve received a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Resources Engineering from California State University, Humboldt. He is a member of the American Public Works Association and California Society of Professional Engineers.
