- National Health Survey Underway in Monterey County
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the most comprehensive survey of the health and nutritional status of the U.S. population is coming to Monterey County beginning on January 10, 2017.

- Monterey County Health Department awarded grant funds for active transportation programs
Monterey County Health Department has been awarded a two-year Active Transportation Program grant from CalTrans to improve the safety of the streets in Monterey County and encourage the use of active modes of transport. The $964,000 grant will begin July 1, 2018.

- First Influenza Death of the Season Reported
The Health Department regretfully announces the death of a Monterey County resident associated with influenza virus infection. The individual was an adult under the age of 65 years. The Health Department will not release additional details about the individual in order to protect the family’s right to privacy and to maintain confidentiality.

- CDPH Issues Guidelines on How to Reduce Exposure to Radio Frequency Energy from Cell Phones
As smartphone use continues to increase in the U.S., especially among children, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) today issued guidance for individuals and families who want to decrease their exposure to the radio frequency energy emitted from cell phones. Although the scientific community has not reached a consensus on the risks of cell phone use, research suggests long-term, high use may impact human health.

- Celebrating Monterey County Public Art Exhibit kick off 12/5
The new public art exhibit at the Monterey County Government Center Administration Building will have its kick off Tuesday, December 5th.
- Delay in Implementation of Monterey County Safe Parking Program
The Safe Parking Program planned to open on Friday, December 1st at 2616 First Avenue in Marina has been delayed. This delay will allow for more time to continue discussions with the surrounding community and work through contracting issues with the service provider.

- Safe Travels Via Salinas Grant to benefit 65+ population and Elementary Schools in Salinas
The Monterey County Health Department announced today that it has been awarded $130,000 as part of a Safe Travels Via Salinas grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. This grant will bring pedestrian safety education to the 65+ population and bike education to schools in Salinas. The yearlong grant start date was on November 13, 2017 and will benefit three elementary schools in East Salinas – Bardin Elementary, Cesar E. Chavez, and Dr. Oscar F. Loya Elementary.

- Sport-Harvested Mussel Quarantine Lifted along the California Coast
California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has lifted that the statewide annual quarantine on mussels taken by sport harvesters from California's ocean waters. Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins remain at low or undetectable levels along the entire coast. PSP is a form of nervous system poisoning. Concentrated levels of the toxins can develop in mussels and other bivalve shellfish when they feed on certain naturally occurring marine plankton that can increase during favorable environmental conditions.
