MINUTES FROM MVAAC MEETING

July 11, 2012

 

Chair called meeting to order at 3:00 PM.

Pledge of Allegiance.

Members present:  Sid Williams, Juan Sanchez, Ralph Villar, Ronald Holland, James Bogan, Dan Presser, Tom Davis, Richard Barratt, Charlie Eskridge, Abel Quinones.

Also present:  Wes Morrill ( MVAO),  Michael McFadden (Principal Office Assistant, MVAO).

On Motion of Richard Barratt and Second of James Bogan; the minutes of May 9, 2012 were unanimously approved.

 

PUBLIC COMMENT:  None.

Report  from the Chair:  No Report

Committee Reports:

Pending State & Federal Legislation (Abel Quinones): HR 3200, “America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009” a.k.a. “Obamacare” has been upheld by the Supreme Court. The House is planning to present legislation to repeal. 

AB 1842 related to cemetery funding and AB 1614 extending FORA have passed the State Assembly and Senate are scheduled for final action and presentation to the Governor in August after the current recess.   

Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Update (James Bogan): Mr. Bogan is proposing that the Board of Supervisors reaffirm their commitment to the already agreed upon site for the Veterans Cemetery.

VA Clinic (Charlie Eskridge): No report.

Stand Down 2012 (Ron Holland): Mr. Holland stated the Stand Down was a success, and that a full after-action report is forthcoming. 293 homeless veterans were served by 380 volunteers.  $45,890 was expended with over $200,000 received from “in-kind” donations.

Veteran of the Year Program (Juan Sanchez): (See below under unfinished business.)   

Military & Veterans Affairs Report  (Tom Griffin):  Mr. Morrill reported in Mr. Griffin’s absence.  MVAO has a new office (209A) at the Life Foundation Building (formerly known as the Quad) in Salinas. 

First round interviews are taking place  on July 11 and 12 for a new veterans’ representative, and MVAO has received approval from the Board of Supervisors for one additional veterans’ representative.   

MVAO is receiving positive feedback on the new van that transports veterans to Palo Alto for appointments.

Unfinished Business:  Veteran of the Year Program – Handout was distributed with current information on the event for review. Event will be on Saturday, November  3, from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., at the Salinas Elks Lodge.  James Bogan volunteered to be M.C.  Leon Panetta’s son will be asked to be the guest speaker.

On motion of Ron Holland, seconded by Dan Presser, it was unanimously agreed the price of tickets will be $35 and the meal will be catered by the Elks at a cost of $19 per plate. On motion of Dan Presser and second of James Bogan,  UVC will pay for each VOY recipient and (1)  guest to attend. Motion passed by majority vote.

Balloting for 2012 Veteran of the Year – Ballots were distributed with instructions given by Chair.  12 VOY recipients were selected by ballot and are as follows: James Nunn, Carl Triplett, Karl Karl, Dr. John Kistinger, Robert Lockwood, Joe Gunter, Shelby Jackson (posthumously), Michael O’Brien, Juan Jose, John Tomkinson, Byron Hoffman, and Claudia Parker.      

New Business:  Heroes Open Golf Tournament: Brochure was distributed by Chair requesting additional support. 

Commission Members’ Comments:  Dan Presser spoke with the General Manager of KSBW, and the Stand Down report has not appeared on their website.  Teresa Wright has been called by Dan Presser for follow-up, and will also be contacted by Wes Morrill.

Meeting was adjourned at 4:30P.M.

Next Meeting:  September 12, 2012.
