Chair called meeting to order at 3:00 PM.
Pledge of Allegiance.
Members present: Sid Williams, James Bogan, Dan Presser, Ron Holland, Michael O’Brien,
Scott Dick, Rick Martin, Ralph Villar, Juan Sanchez, Hazel Tompkins.
Also present: Wes Morrill (Interim VSO), Michael McFadden (Principal Office Assistant, MVAO).
Minutes from March 13, 2013 meeting approved (Bogan/O’Brien).
Report from the Chair: Sid Williams welcomed Hazel Tompkins as the Representative from District 4. Mr. Rick Martin was welcomed as the Representative from District 2. May 16, at 2:00 P.M., in the FORA conference room, is the next organizational meeting for the Heroes Open Golf Tournament.
Pending State & Federal Legislation: Scott Dick stated that there are various bills pending at the State level that affect veterans. He is keeping printed information for those interested, and will also
e-mail information to those who request it.
Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Update: James Bogan yielded his time to the Cemetery petition being circulated for signatures.
Veteran of the Year Program: James Bogan reported that the VOY event will be held at the Monterey Elks on November 2, starting at noon. The caterer from last year is being procured. The speaker has yet to be confirmed, and will be decided at the July MVAAC meeting. Nominations must be in by June 30 to the Veterans Services Office.
VA Clinic: James Bogan informed the Commission that work is scheduled to begin on the new
VA Clinic in June, 2013.
Military & Veterans Affairs Report: Wes Morrill distributed a handout of interest and reviewed
its main points with the Commission.
1. Sid Williams continued the discussion of the draft report format for the Board of Supervisors (BOS) after each MVAAC meeting to keep BOS informed of MVAAC business. It was agreed upon that the representatives will establish rapport as they see fit with their individual Supervisors, and report back to MVAAC as necessary. The Commission will re-visit this issue in the near future.
New Business: The Chair led a discussion
about the Open Space Petitions. The
blue petition being circulated is sponsored by the United Veterans Council.
If enough signatures are obtained by the end of May 2013, the blue
petition will be on the ballot in November.
Commission Members’ Comments: Each commissioner was asked to introduce himself/herself to the Commission.
Meeting was adjourned at 4:40 P.M.
