Chair called meeting to order at 3:00 PM.
Pledge of Allegiance.
Members present: Sid Williams, Dan Presser, Ron Holland, Michael O’Brien,
Scott Dick, Ralph Villar, Juan Sanchez, Hazel Tompkins, Richard Garza.
Also present: Wes Morrill (Interim VSO), Michael McFadden (Principal Office Assistant, MVAO).
PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
Minutes from May 8, 2013 meeting approved (Williams/Presser).

Sid Williams reminded the Commission that the Heroes’ Open Golf
Tournament will be on November 9, 2013.
Pending State & Federal Legislation: Scott Dick provided a verbal summary of upcoming legislation that pertains to veterans’ issues. He will be e-mailing this information to Michael McFadden for distribution to the Commission members.
Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Update: Richard Garza provided an update. Sid Williams stated that money is still needed for the Endowment, making continued fundraising necessary.
Veteran of the Year Program: Juan Sanchez reminded the Commission that the Veteran of the Year program will be held on November 2 at the Monterey Elks Club.
VA Clinic: Wes Morrill reported that the opening of the new VA Clinic is tracking for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, with a possible ceremonial groundbreaking in August 2013..
Military & Veterans Affairs Report: Wes Morrill distributed a handout of items of interest to veterans and reviewed its main points with the Commission.
New Business: Biographies of the Veteran of the Year nominees and ballots for voting were distributed by Wes Morrill and Michael McFadden to the members of the Commission. Two nominees
were selected from each district with two at-large nominees also selected. The 2013 Veterans of the Year are: Mervin Venuty and Thomas Payne from District 1, Robert Adams and Pete Quiane from District 2, Joyce Hyde and Dr. Duane Hyde from District 3, Mary Estrada and Greg Hobson from District 4, Michael Levine and Thomas Griffin from District 5, and Ray Morisca and Gerald Griffin
as at-large Veterans of the Year.
Commission Members’ Comments: Behavioral Health opened a new mental health facility in Soledad.
Meeting was adjourned at 4:10 P.M.
