Monterey County Military & Veterans Affairs Advisory Commission


November 13, 2013


Chair called meeting to order at 3:00 PM.

Pledge of Allegiance.

Members present:  Sid Williams, Dan Presser, Michael O’Brien, Ron Holland,

Ralph Villar, Juan Sanchez, Hazel Tompkins, Mary Estrada.

Also present: Wes Morrill (MA II, MVAO), Michael McFadden (Principal Office Assistant, MVAO).


Minutes from September 11, 2013 meeting approved (Villar/Tompkins). 

Report from the Chair:  Sid Williams thanked those who attended the groundbreaking ceremony

for the new VA/DOD Clinic and those who attended the Veteran of the Year banquet.  The Heroes Open Golf Tournament was held on November 9 and the Chair is working with the treasurer on the final accounting

Neither Measure M nor Measure K passed in the recent November 5 election.

Committee Reports:

Pending State & Federal Legislation:  (Scott Dick absent).  Sid Williams stated that the Military is in the process of a draw-down and the Department of Defense is considering prospective pay and benefit reductions.

Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Update: (James Bogan absent). The Chair informed those present that fundraising for the Ft. Ord Veterans Cemetery is ongoing; The monies in place now only cover the cost for Phase 1.

Veteran of the Year Program:  (James Bogan absent).  No report made. 

VA Clinic:  (James Bogan absent).

Military & Veterans Affairs Report:  Wes Morrill stated that in the future he will personally

Interview all Veteran of the Year honorees individually to ensure the accuracy of the VOY

information.  He also reported that in the new VA/DOD Clinic, the MVAO has received twice the

space originally approved for them.  Planning is ongoing for the proposed Veterans Drop-In


Unfinished Business:   None.

New Business:  The Chair reminded the Commission that at the next meeting in January, 2014,

MVAAC will hold elections for the positions of Chair and Vice-Chair.
