Monterey County Military & Veterans Affairs Advisory Commission


January 8, 2014


Chair called meeting to order at 3:00 PM.

Pledge of Allegiance.

Members present:  Sid Williams, Dan Presser, Michael O’Brien, Rich Garza, James Bogan,

Ralph Villar, Juan Sanchez, Hazel Tompkins, Mary Estrada, Scott Dick.

Also present: Wes Morrill ( MVAO), Michael McFadden (Principal Office Assistant, MVAO).


Minutes from November 13, 2013 meeting approved (Dick/Sanchez). 

Report from the Chair:  Sid Williams reviewed the 2013 Veterans events: The Veteran of the Year Banquet, the Heroes Open Golf Tournament, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the new VA Clinic.  Net profit for the 2013 Heroes Open was approximately $22,000 which will be transferred from the UVC to the Cemetery Foundation.

Committee Reports:

Pending State & Federal Legislation:  (Scott Dick)  Mr. Dick presented a handout and reviewed its highlights.  A motion was made and passed unanimously (Presser/Bogan) to send a letter to the Board of Supervisors asking them to communicate with our Congressman and Senators concerning COLA disparity.

Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Update: (James Bogan). Mr. Bogan stated that most of the money for Phase 1 of the Cemetery is now in place.  We are now waiting for the State to act.  

Veteran of the Year Program:  (James Bogan).  Mr. Bogan reported that the Veteran of the Year Program will take place this year on November 1st at the Salinas Elks Club.  He is requesting the same caterer used for the 2013 banquet.

VA Clinic:  (James Bogan).  November 11, 2013, was the groundbreaking ceremony for the

new VA Clinic.  Mr. Bogan estimated that actual construction will begin in February of this year.

Military & Veterans Affairs Report:  Wes Morrill reiterated that in the future he will personally

interview all Veteran of the Year honorees individually to ensure the accuracy of the VOY

information.  He also reported that the USDVA and a team of State personnel made a site visit to

the Cemetery property today.

Unfinished Business:   None.

New Business:  Election of Officers.  Ballots were distributed to all voting members present, and tallied by Wes Morrill and Michael McFadden. The Chair for 2014 is Sid Williams; the Vice Chair is James Bogan.  Sid Williams appointed Michael O’Brien as Parliamentarian, and the MVAO as Secretary.

Commission Members’ Comments:  Round Robin.
