ACTION MINUTES

March 12, 2014

 

Chair called meeting to order at 3:05 PM.

Pledge of Allegiance

Members present:  Sid Williams, Dan Presser, Rich Garza, James Bogan,

Ralph Villar, Juan Sanchez, Mary Estrada, Scott Dick, Ron Holland.

Also present: George Dixon (VSO Monterey County), Wes Morrill ( MVAO), Michael McFadden (Principal Office Assistant, MVAO).

PUBLIC COMMENT:  None.

Minutes from January 8, 2013 meeting approved (Villar/Presser). 

Report from the Chair:  Sid Williams informed the Commission that the 2014 Monterey County Stand-Down will be held from August 1-3 on the former Fort Ord.  The Heroes Open Golf Tournament will be held on November 8, with the first planning meeting to be held on March 20.

Committee Reports:

Pending State & Federal Legislation:  (Scott Dick) Mr. Dick distributed handouts and reviewed highlights of pending legislation pertaining to veterans.

Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Update: (James Bogan). Mr. Bogan reported that the first construction phase is estimated to begin in November of 2014, with completion in January, 2016. 

Veteran of the Year Program:  (James Bogan).  Mr. Bogan stated that the Veteran of the Year Program will take place this year on November 1st at the Salinas Elks Club.  He has secured the services of the same caterer used for the 2013 banquet

VA/DOD Clinic:  (James Bogan). Mr. Bogan reported construction was scheduled to begin in February of this year but is still pending.

Military & Veterans Affairs Report:  Mr. Dixon mentioned that AB 2047, if passed, will

 make subvention monies permanent  to County Veterans Services offices, greatly assisting these

offices to advocate for California veterans.  He also distributed a handout highlighting matters

pertaining to veterans in Monterey County.

Unfinished Business:   None.

New Business: 

Discussion of “Veteran of the Year” – 2014

Distribution of materials and nomination forms (Wes Morrill).  The Chair requested the Commissioners read and review the materials before the upcoming meeting in May, so as to be prepared for the nomination process.

Commission Members’ Comments: 

The Purple Heart Chapter meets on the second Wednesday of every month at the National Guard

Building in Marina.

The next Stand-Down planning meeting will be held on Saturday, March 22, at 11:00 A.M., at the

Veterans Transition Center.

Meeting adjourned at 4:05 P.M.   

Next Meeting:  Next meeting is May 14, 2014.
