I.          Call to Order

Meeting called to order by Chair at 1:00 PM.

Pledge of Allegiance

     

Roll Call:

Present  - James Bogan (Chair, United Veterans Council),  Ralph Villar (District 1), Leonard Ortiz (District 3), Ralph Sirtak (District 4), Bill Nye (District 5), Jack Stewart (Vice Chair, United Veterans Council).

 

Ex officio – Stephen Jorgensen (CDVA),  Tim O’Halloran (City of Seaside), Edith Johnsen (Veterans’ Families), Janet Parks (Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Foundation), John P. Garske (Ft. Ord Retiree Council), Tom Mancini (Ft. Ord Reuse Authority),  Nicole Charles (Representing Assemblymember Bill Monning), Julian Chacon (Representing Congressman Sam Farr), Thomas Griffin (Secretary, Monterey County VSO),  Wes Morrill (MA II, VSO Staff), Michael McFadden (Recorder, VSO Staff).  

 

­Absent – Frank Aguillon (District 2), Hans Poschman (Representing 15th Senate District, Senator Sam Blakeslee).

II.                  Approval of February 9, 2012  Minutes:  On Motion by Mr. Stewart, seconded by Mr. Villar, the minutes were unanimously approved.

 

III.                CAC Chairman Activity Report:  James Bogan.  No report.

      

 

IV.                Public Comments  (Limited to 3 minutes each):   Julian Chacon announced that Saturday, April 14, from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., Congressman Farr’s office will sponsor an Academy Day at the Carpenters’ Hall, 910 2nd Avenue, Marina.  Representatives from all branches of the Armed Forces will be present to explain admissions procedures and scholarships to their academies.  Flyers were distributed and all interested were encouraged to RSVP to Julian Chacon by phone or e-mail.

 

V.                  Update on pertinent Federal legislative activities:  Julian Chacon.  Mr. Chacon made an appeal for letters of support from Monterey County veterans for a veterans cemetery in Monterey County.  He provided form letters, and stated that anyone could send him a personalized letter by close of business day on March 15.

 

VI.                Update on pending state legislation:  Nicole Charles.   Ms. Charles presented a fact sheet on AB 1842, which was just introduced.  This legislation would provide a way for monies to be lent to the Endowment Fund for the Cemetery, and to be reimbursed at a later date.   She asked for letters of support by March 12.           

 

VII.              Update on Endowment Parcel (EP) Matters:  Tim O’Halloran (City of Seaside).  The city is moving forward with the EIR concerning Monterey Downs and the Veterans’ Cemetery.  He expects late 2012 as a finishing date.   

VIII.            FORA Update: Jonathan Garcia.  FORA will be considering a letter of support for AB 1842.  Mr. Garcia introduced a new staff member, Mr. Robert Norris.

IX.                Report from Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Foundation:  Janet Parks / Candace Ingram.  The UVC will be responsible for the fundraiser golf tournament on November 10, 2012.

X.                  Update from Fundraising Liaison Subcommittee:  Edith Johnsen: Jack Stewart presented the update for Edith Johnsen:  The United Veterans Council agreed at their February, 2012, meeting to take over the annual golf tournament, in perpetuity.  They now have a website for the tournament: uvc-mc.com, and they are working on programs and new ideas that will all be military-related.  They now have one corporate sponsor, and are pursuing five more.  Mr. Dan Presser is their Public Relations person.
