CEMETERY CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

1.        James Bogan, Chair, called the meeting to order at 1:00 P.M.

 

A roll call of members was conducted.

Present: Ralph Villar (District 1), Frank Aguillon (District 2), Leonard Ortiz (District 3),

James Bogan (District 4), Bill Nye (District 5), Jack Stewart (United Veterans Council),

Ex Officio: Janet Parks (Ft. Ord Cemetery Foundation), Bruce Evans (Fort Ord Retiree

Council), Edith Johnsen (Veterans’ Families Representative), Tom Mancini (FORA),

Julian Chacon (For Rep. Sam Farr), Mr. Hans Poschman (For Senator Blakesley), Nicole Charles (For Assemblyman Monning), Tom Griffin (MVA Officer).

Absent:  Abel Quinones (United Veterans Council) – Excused; Steve Jorgensen (CALVET)

Excused; Juan Sanchez (Monterey County Military & Veterans’ Advisory Commission)

Excused; Tim O’Halloran (City of Seaside) – Excused.

 

2.        Minutes approved from June 9, 2011, meeting.

 

3.        Public Comments:

Bill Monning’s meeting to be held in AM of July 20, 2011, w/veterans, at VTC,

concerning legislative issues that affect veterans.  Flyer distributed.

 

4.        Federal Legislative Update: (Julian Chacon)

None at this time.

 

5.        State Legislative Update: (Nicole Charles)

AB 629 is before the currently recessed State legislature; update in the future.

 

6.        Endowment Parcel: (Jerry Hernandez/Dave Girard)

     Discussed that transferring responsibility to FORA for the development of the

     Cemetery would save @ 50% in costs.  Discussion of process.  Steps are being

     taken to accomplish this action.

 

7.        FORA Grant Update: (Jonathan Garcia)

Will pursue looking into the idea of obtaining deeds to the property (cemetery

& endowment parcel) so they can be used to raise funding.

 

8.        Cemetery Foundation: (Janet Parks/Candy Ingram)

Looking for Veterans Group contacts in attempts to raise funds.  Mr Porschman,

Senator Blakesley’s representative, indicated that he will ask Blakesley’s office

to contact SLO and other County representatives to inform the public and veterans in

those counties concerning cemetery issues and needs.

 

9.        Fundraising Liaison Sub-Committee: (Edith Johnsen)

Discussed next golf tournament.  Ms. Johnsen solicited members for the liaison

sub-committee to assist her.  Various other ideas were discussed for fundraising.
