Foundations in Cultural Competence

Course Objective(s)

• Define diversity, multiculturalism and humility within the CLAS framework in relation to providing community services;
• Identify (at least 3) barriers or challenges to incorporate multicultural concepts into our work as staff, service providers, community members, etc.;
• Identify (at least 3) strategies to effectively incorporate multicultural concepts and processes into our day-to-day work; and
• Identify and articulate (at least 3) ways to model effective use of self in addressing cultural differences, culture conflict and strengthening relational bridges.

Course Description

Using discussion, videos and lecture, Dr. Mock will lead us in an exploration of the richness and also the inevitable challenges that arise when working with individuals from different cultural backgrounds.  Dr. Mock will facilitate our ability to productively address these challenges and develop ways to turn often difficult dialogues into ones that are informative, instructive and ultimately helpful for all involved.

Continuing Education

  • Six (6) Credits for: LCSW, LMFT, LPPC, LEP, Psychologists
