Course Description
This training is geared toward all Monterey County Behavioral Health and Contract Provider staff members whose scope of practice includes documenting or overseeing the documentation for the delivery of mental health services to individuals and their families. This training will describe Monterey County Behavioral Health documentation expectations as noted in the Clinical Documentation Guide and in MCBH Policies and Procedures. This training will use lecture and case examples to help participants begin to be able to think intentionally about the services they deliver so they can document these services more efficiently and effectively. Further focus will be given to the “Golden Thread” between psychosocial assessment, treatment planning and service delivery, as well as medical necessity.

Course Objective(s)
  • EXPLAIN the Golden Thread philosophy of Mental Health documentation.
  • DESCRIBE the three components of Medical Necessity needed to support Progress Note/MediCal billing.
  • UNDERSTAND the purpose of each Progress Note component (F, I, R, P).
  • WRITE a good enough Progress Note for a range of service types (e.g., CM, Therapy, Assessment).
