National Food Safety Education Month - Food Safety Conference

In recognition of September being designated as National Food Safety Education Month, the Environmental Health Bureau of the Monterey County Health Department announced today the recipients of its Award of Excellence, a highlight of the Monterey County Health Department’s Gold Seal program for retail food facilities.

Those who excel are recognized with our Gold Seal and those food facilities who have consistently demonstrated excellence in providing safe and secure food will be honored” said John Ramirez, Director of Environmental Health.

This year's award recipients are (in alphabetical order):

  • Canterbury Woods Retirement Community
  • Nepenthe Restaurant
  • Sun Street Center-The Road to Recovery

The announcement was made at the 11th Annual Food Safety Conference. This year’s conference, “SIP: Sustainability, Innovation and Progress”, highlighted food safety innovation and sustainability. The Keynote Speaker, Executive Chef Matthew Beaudin from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, presented “Being a Chef in a Sustainable World”. Also sharing the platform were speakers from the Salinas Fire Department, with a focus on common fire safety and inspection violations found in food facilities. The Monterey County Health Department covered an in-depth review of four new food safety laws, AB626: Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations, AB1884: Single Use Plastic Straws, AB2178: Limited Service Charitable Feeding Operations, SB1192: Children’s Meals and offered a presentation on AB1826, the Organic Recycling and Composting law.   

The conference marked the culmination of Monterey County’s Food Safety Education Month, focusing on the importance of Food Safety education to an informed workforce for the restaurant and foodservice industry, while at the same time raising the public’s level of confidence in the industry’s commitment to Food Safety. National Food Safety Month was created in 1994 to heighten awareness about the importance of food safety education. The Monterey County Health Department Environmental Health Bureau was recently recognized by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) as a recipient of its 2019 Model Practice Award for the innovative Food Safety Conference and for outstanding contributions in local public health practice. The Monterey County Environmental Health Bureau has been part of the Food Safety educational conference for the past eleven years.
