City of Pacific Grove goes smoke-free

Post Date:01/27/2020

Pacific Grove is now a tobacco-free community.  Residents are protected from second-hand smoke exposure in multi-unit housing complexes, community events, sidewalks and walking trails.  The City joins the growing number of communities who protect youth by administering a local tobacco retail licensing ordinance.

“Pacific Grove is the first city in Monterey County to take a crucial stand in protecting their youth from tobacco addiction by placing a ban on flavored tobacco products (including menthol) and electronic smoking devices” said Elsa Jimenez, Monterey County Director of Health Services.

Monterey County Tobacco Control Program has worked alongside Pacific Grove staff, police and council members for over nine months to create an ordinance that encompasses several aspects of community health; including first city in Monterey County to ban smoking in multi-unit housing.

By banning outdoor tobacco use Pacific Grove protects the health of their community and visitors, and reduces the amount of tobacco trash left behind ensuring the fragile Marine Sanctuary is protected for future generations.
