Confirmation of Newly Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 among Monterey County Residents

Post Date:03/20/2020

The Monterey County Health Department has confirmed three newly confirmed cases of novel coronavirus disease, also known as COVID-19 among Monterey County residents. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to five. The tests were performed at the Monterey County’s Public Health Laboratory, which began testing for COVID-19 on March 6 and has performed 202 tests to date.

Although public health investigations are still underway, the Monterey County Health Department believes that these cases were either exposed while traveling abroad or were exposed to a known case.

All three newly diagnosed individuals presented to local emergency departments.  The individuals were triaged, isolated and evaluated utilizing protocols developed and implemented by local hospitals to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the health care facility.  The Monterey County Health Department continues to commend area hospitals for their rapid and skilled response.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 are isolated and monitored by the Monterey County Health Department according to the most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.  The Monterey County Health Department continues to investigate the cases to identify other people who may have been in close contact with the cases in recent days to determine if additional people need to be tested, quarantined or isolated.

“The most recent confirmed cases represent an increased risk of community spread of COVID-19 virus.  Community spread increases the likelihood that our older adults will be exposed.  Older adults are at greater risk of serious illness and death from COVID-19.  It is imperative that all county residents adhere to my County Health Officer Shelter in Place Order and stay at home unless you need to access essential services or are a provider of essential services. In addition, all employers should identify solutions that allow employees to work from home,” states Dr. Edward Moreno, Monterey County Health Officer.

To further reduce the spread of COVID-19, all Monterey County residents should:

  • Adhere to the Monterey County Health Officer Shelter in Place Order.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.  Stay at least 6 feet away from ill individuals.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

If you do feel ill:

  • Stay home until you feel better.  Avoid public or crowded areas.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with our elbow or a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Do not cover coughs and sneezes with your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Consider the use of over-the-counter medications to reduce symptoms of fever, coughing, and congestion.
  • If your symptoms worsen, call your medical provider. Most otherwise healthy individuals with mild respiratory symptoms may not need to see a medical provider. Your provider may advise you to stay home, to come into the office for evaluation and wear a mask when you arrive, or to go to an alternate care location like an emergency department if you are severely ill.
