Letter from the Library Director - National Library Week
April 20, 2020
To the Monterey County Free Libraries Community,
For your libraries, April is generally a time of celebration. It contains both National Library Week and National Volunteer Week, both great opportunities to recognize things that help our communities engage, succeed, and thrive. This April is no different, and we are celebrating National Library Week with you.
If you haven’t yet, get in touch – call us, write to us, text us, and we are standing by to help. Our team is answering the phone in English and Spanish six days per week at 831-883-7555. If you want something great to read, assistance with homework, a referral to another community organization, or a lesson in navigating technology – give your Monterey County Free Libraries a call.
Also, we are helping in new ways – a team is 3D printing and sewing masks for the community and getting them out to those in need. A team is creating and posting new and innovative online programs to bring early literacy, STEM education, and wellness to those who now can’t come to the library for these engaging opportunities. A team is working with our online vendors to expand our reach – anyone can now get a book or audiobook delivered via Zip Books at home, an instant electronic library card, and have live homework assistance, e-books, e-audiobooks and databases at their fingertips.
A team is planning for our future – we don’t yet know what May or June will look like for us, or how changes will impact what you will need from your libraries. We are working on plans for summer reading program, assisting students in going back to school, and helping those who are losing jobs or other vital support. We are prioritizing services for when we can bring some more back and working with our experts in the field on different ways to achieve our goals.
Finally, thank you to all our volunteers and support groups. We are hearing from you and know you are standing by ready to help and can’t wait to get back to work. As there are new opportunities for grants and other support, physically or virtually, we will be asking for your help. The overlap of National Library Week and National Volunteer Week is a happy serendipity of the calendar but could not be more appropriate. Happy National Volunteer Week to you all, our Friends and Foundation members, our literacy volunteers, our citizenship volunteers, our student volunteers, our interns, and all our community members who stop by your local branch to lend a hand. You are part of our team, we miss you, and can’t wait until we can work together again.
Thank you all and happy National Library Week!
