The Monterey County District Attorney’s Annuity Fraud Unit has an aggressive campaign to identify, investigate and prosecute any unscrupulous agents, con men and other criminals who have attempted or have committed annuity fraud. Our unit will investigate and prosecute any case involving a scenario where a person benefits unlawfully from the sale of an insurance policy.
Our unit provides insight and oversight for cases that are submitted from any law enforcement agency. Also, if our office receives a complaint directly we can investigate the case from inception. Additionally, the unit works closely with investigators from the California Department of Insurance.
The unit also has an outreach program that informs the community about the pitfalls that can occur in an annuity fraud situation. The unit is also increasing the education and awareness of this problem within the government and private sectors of the community.
The area of annuity fraud is important due to the growing cost of insurance and the losses that are incurred by some of the most vulnerable people in our community. By increasing the awareness within our community, we can prevent fraudulent transactions and increase security which in turn will restore confidence in annuity and life insurance sales. We are committed to making the annuity system and its investments work for those who need it.
The District Attorney’s Office will provide speakers to interested groups who want to learn more about the topic of annuity fraud.
