The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office is currently offering volunteer and internship opportunities in various units within our office. Duties vary in each unit and are subject to change. Expectations will be discussed during the interview process. Once selected, the volunteer/intern will be assigned duties and responsibilities by the unit supervisor in accordance with the policies and procedures as directed by the District Attorney. An orientation will consist of the confidential nature of all phases of the program or unit; the volunteer/intern's commitment the program, especially as it relates to a time commitment; the drug free, alcohol free and smoke free working environment in the office; the specific job expectations; and discussion and receipt of the Policy and Procedure Manual for Volunteers and Interns.

General expectations for volunteers and interns include:
  • Maintaining a positive relationship with their supervisor and staff

  • The ability to deal with others without creating offense

  • The ability to accept constructive criticism

  • Demonstration of reliability and responsibility

  • Exercising good judgment, using initiative and being truthful and honest

  • Volunteer/interns service can be terminated at any time by the volunteer/intern or by the District Attorney's Office

The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed all major holidays. Hours are flexible and positions are strictly on a volunteer basis.

Interns applying for legal positions are requested to submit a writing sample. All applicants are required to complete and successfully pass a civilian background investigation prior to acceptance.
Receipt of background results can take approximately 2- 4 weeks.

Potential volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, in reasonably good health, and consent to and pass a background check. Volunteers must be available to work a minimum of four hours per week during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8a.m.- 5p.m.
