  • Amendment No. 8 to the Unified Franchise Agreement Approved

    Amendment No. 8 to the Unified Franchise Agreement (Agreement No. A-11631) between the County of Monterey and USA Waste of California, Inc., dba Carmel Marina Corporation, for the Exclusive Collection of Solid Waste and Recyclables in Unincorporated Monterey County has been approved.

  • Jennie-O Turkey Recalls Raw Ground Turkey Products due to Possible Salmonella Reading Contamination

    Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales,has issued a recall for approximately 91,388 pounds of raw ground turkey products that may be associated with an illness outbreak of Salmonella. There is a concern that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.


  • Las Palmas area bat tests positive for rabies virus

    On October 15th, 2018, a bat found in the Las Palmas area of unincorporated Monterey County tested positive for the rabies virus. While there was exposure to an owned pet, Monterey County Animal Services investigated and determined that there was no human exposure in this case and is issuing this positive test information as a reminder to pet and livestock owners.

About Us

The Animal Services Division protects, promotes and enhances the health, safety and quality of life for companion animals and other abandoned animals, as well as for the people of Monterey County.

Programs and Services

Animal Services is a division of the Monterey Environmental Health Bureau. We serve the unincorporated areas of Monterey County and contracting cities. Our division consists of 3 program areas: Licensing, Field Services, & Shelter Services.

Our Shelter

Animal Services houses about 4,500 animals annually. These animals, mostly dogs and cats, have been brought in from the unincorporated areas of Monterey County, Carmel, Greenfield, Del Rey Oaks, CSUMB, Camp Roberts, Ft. Hunter Liggett, or from the state parks.

Licensing & Renewals

Shelter Services:

Animals Sheltering, Rabies Quarantine,  Scan for Microchip, Public Education, Adoptions/Adoption Counseling, Animal Redemption by Owner.

Field services:

Enforcement of Animal Regulations, Rabies Control, Animal Complaint Investigation, Mediation & Resolution, Licensing and, Public Education.


Responsible Pet Ownership Training, Animal Behavior Training, Volunteer Program, and Presentations to schools, service organizations, etc.
